Balancing Act tells the story of DeMarcello Funes, a 22-year-old emerging circus performer. But Funes is no ordinary clown: he teaches a forgotten history of African American performance and its ties to the circus arts.
A circus artist brings to life a forgotten history of African American performance.
Growing up, fellow students bullied Funes for being mixed raced, and he coped by being the class clown. Eventually, he funneled his ability to make others laugh and became a real clown in an after-school circus program. More than ten years later, Funes now performs professionally and is passing his passion along to a new generation of young circus performers.
Watch as Funes balances his multiple roles as performer, mentor, and torchbearer of history.
